Phthiotic Thebes

Phthiotic Thebes was an Ancient Greek city whose remains today are found 1 km north east of the village of Mikrothebai. [1]

Grainger concluded from the election of men from Thebes to office in the Aetolian League that the city became a member of the League in the 220s BCE.[2]

In 217 BCE it a was a key outpost of the Aetolian League blocking Philip Vs communications with the south.[3] Polybios tells how Philip laid siege to the city, first building 3 camps and then joining the up with lines of circumvallation.[4] Though initially the city offered determined resistance the citizens surrendered when a section of the wall that Philip had mined collapsed.[5] The inhabitants were sold by Philip into slavery.[6]
